The problem with being only an SI
We started as a system integrator. We're now a software development company. That shift was deliberate, and it was uncomfortable.
As an SI, your revenue is other people's products. You know the platform better than the vendor's own sales team, and your margin is still set by someone else's licence terms and someone else's roadmap. When their pricing changes, your business model changes with it, and you find out at the same time as your customers.
What we built
First the modules that closed real gaps in what we were implementing. Then products that stand on their own — a web database application, Android apps for warehouse operations, and most recently a SaaS restaurant platform.
The uncomfortable part
Implementation revenue is predictable and product revenue is not. You spend months building something nobody has paid for yet, while the implementation work that pays the salaries still has to ship.
Why it was worth it
The products and the implementations feed each other. Every module we built came from a real client problem, so it was validated before it existed. And every implementation now starts from a stronger position than one built on stock software alone.
If you're an SI thinking about the same move: build from what your clients already asked you for. Not from what you wish the market wanted.
